Stranger – Neighbor – Brother and Sister

We are taught from birth in our Society to see who we do not know as a stranger.

For our Safety. For our Security. For the Preservation of our life.

When Cars became the mainstream mode of transportation, anyone seen on the streets was advertised to be called a Jay. Thus Jay Walkers. Before Cars, the land was for people to roam about freely, not to be subjected to narrow pathways.

Sometimes I like to ask myself fun questions that make we think that I’ll ask to other people. For example, why can’t I walk into a ‘Stranger’s house and be expected to be treated like a long awaited guest? Why can’t I go to the Park to chase a wild animal? Why can’t I go hunting birds in the public? There are so many of them. I’m sure I can hit one if I use a bow and arrow and try hard enough.

History shows that man has always dominated man to his own destruction. We oppress each other, hurt each other, and strip each other of our freedoms.

Why is there so much hate and war in the world? Sickness and Disease?

The Buddha once asked this question. He did all he could to solve the problem. So do many of we who come across this question. We try to contribute something to the World, to give something special to others, to work towards a common Goal. And here we are now, at School….

School is Often seen as a burden to many. Bleak and boring. Unnecessary work. What is the point?

I have a dream, for School. A dream that came to me when I began to see the hidden beauty and potential of School. I think School should be no different than a Spiritual Temple, a Monastery. Where we are taught to strengthen Mind, Body and Spirit.

Mind-Mental Knowledge. Body-Physical Knowledge. Spirit-Spiritual Knowledge.

And then turn our knowledge into wisdom through learning how we can contribute to solving problems in the World, and putting forth purposeful effort into doing so. A place where Strangers become Neighbors, and Neighbors become Brothers and Sisters. A Watchtower, an example to our Communities of what a Community should and can do. Where Teachers and Professors set the example in being active Community Members, Encouraging Mentors, and Wise Friends. Where students begin their quest to answer who they are, and how they can help. Where we go to Ponder, collaborate, and take action. Our second home when we do not have a first.

I think School should be no different than a Spiritual Temple, a Monastery. Where we are taught to strengthen Mind, Body and Spirit. And turn our knowledge into wisdom through learning how we can contribute to solving problems in the World, and put forward purposeful effort into doing so.

A place where Strangers become Neighbors, and Neighbors become Brothers and Sisters.
