POETRY SLAM: SPRING 2019
Poets of Ventura College! On Thursday, April 11th, the college will host its fourth annual Poetry Slam during the Diversity In Culture Festival. We’re now actively looking for students to submit their poetry for a chance to perform during the Slam and to win $250, $150, and $100 for first, second, and third prizes.
In conjunction with our One Book One Campus selection for Fall 2018–Spring 2019 academic year, Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren, our theme for the poetry slams is “Discovery.” Poets are welcome—and encouraged—to interpret this theme any way they see fit in their writing.
Since the Poetry Slam is two rounds, students are strongly encouraged to compose and prepare to perform two original works. Students may opt to perform the same poem for round two that they performed in round one should they advance; however, students who have two original pieces to perform instead of one may earn higher scores from the judges.
To enter the Poetry Slam Contest, simply register a user account with VC Voices, then submit your entry. When selecting a category for your submission, please only select “Spring 2019 Poetry Slam Submission.” Along with your entry, please make sure you list your phone number and an email address you regularly check.
We will contact all poets who submit their work to provide further information about the Slam, so please check your email regularly. For poets interested in learning a little about writing and performing poetry, a small series of workshops hosted by local Slam Poet and VC English Professor Fernando Salinas will be held Tuesday afternoons at 3:00 pm on March 5th, March 12, March 19th, and April 2nd in LRC 128, though students are not required to attend these sessions if they are not able.
Note: If you are having technical difficulties submitting your work, you may also submit your poetry via email to VC Professor and Poetry Slam organizer David Carlander at david_carlander1@vcccd.edu.
Thank you, and we hope to see some outstanding poetry from our students here at VC!
